The combat is okay, at best, and the much vaunted stealth kills are harder to achieve than mastery of the ten scrolls of the Shaolin (or something, I realised I was painting myself into a corner as I typed this). Demanding stealth, patience, and careful resource management, it’s an experience that cuts surprisingly deep for a game that looks like a relic of gaming’s simpler. And, sadly, Within the Blade has issues with both. While its chunky, lo-fi visuals would be right at home in some dimly lit arcade straight out of 1987, Within The Blade feels more like a deconstructed Tenchu than anything else. Now, games like this, as I may have said before, live and die on the combat and, in this case, the platforming action on offer also. The fresh new port of developer Ametist Studio's renamed action platformer Within the Blade to the Nintendo Switch from the PC marks a great opportunity for a new wave of fans to discover this hidden gem. Any attempt at narrative is soon buried under a pile of severed limbs though, so honestly it’s best just to focus on staying alive and making sure your foes don’t.
